History

The history of the Faculty of Food Science and Engineering begins in 1948 when the Institute of Food from Bucharest was established (Decree no. 175/1948). The Institute consisted of one faculty and four specialized sections: milling-bakery, dairy, canned foods and extractive industries.

In the academic year 1955-1956 the Institute of Food was transferred from Bucharest to Galati as part of the Technical Institute, where the Faculty of Fishery has been moved since 1953 from Constanta.

Since autumn 1955 the Technical Institute of Galati turned into the Polytechnic Institute of Galati having two faculties:

  • Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
  • Faculty of Food Technology and Fishing (Decree 1608/1955).

In 1974 the University of Galati was established through Decree 105/1974, and in 1991 became „Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati. In 2002, the H.G./2002 from the Official Gazette of Romania, part I, no. 313/2002 published the new name of the faculty, namely Faculty of Food Science and Engineering. Through H.G. no. 88/2005 on the organization of undergraduate studies, and H.G. no. 916/2005 on the organization of higher education institutes, the faculty switches to the education organized on three levels: Bachelor’s degree of 4 years, Master’s degree of 2 years and PhD studies of 3 years.

Currently, the education process at the Faculty of Food Science and Engineering includes all three cycles of higher education defined by Bologna Process:

  • undergraduate engineering studies of 4 years
    • field of study Food Engineering with the following specializations Food Engineering, Food Control and Authenticity, and Fishery and Fish Processing,
    • field of study Engineering and Management, specialization Engineering and Management in Public Food and Agrotourism,
